Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.
In the Certificate II in Salon Assistant you will participate in a range of structured workshop activities that allow you to practice your skills before attempting assessments.
These include:
- Practical skills assessments
- Project assessments
- Theory knowledge assessments
The Certificate II in Salon Assistant is a foundation qualification designed to prepare you for further training in hairdressing or barbering. During this course you will complete routine tasks under supervision and guidance from qualified hairdressers.
If you are interested in becoming a hairdresser or barber, the Certificate III in Hairdressing or the Certificate III in Barbering are the trade qualifications you need to work in the industry. You can undertake both of these courses through an apprenticeship.
These Certificate III in Hairdressing is also an entry requirement for the Certificate IV in Hairdressing.
The Certificate III in Barbering provides you with a pathway to work as a barber in an industry environment such as a barbershop or salon.
The Certificate IV in Hairdressing is your next level qualification and provides you with more in-depth knowledge and experience. You will learn to create unique styles for your clients and develop your product knowledge. The Certificate IV will also equip you will the skills to provide technical leadership within a team of hairdressers and manage a salon.
Depending on your campus location and local partnerships with TAFE NSW, you may have the opportunity to participate in excursions that take you behind the scenes in the hairdressing and salon industry.
You will gain hands-on experience in:
- Shampooing and drying hair, ready for styling
- Applying hair colour
- Braiding hair
In the simulated salon environment of a TAFE NSW hairdressing salon you will gain hands-on experience in cleaning, maintaining tools, greeting clients, shampooing and applying hair colour to our salon clients.
TAFE NSW offers you a range of online and on-campus study environments - industry specific computer rooms, simulated workplaces, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities - to enhance your learning and employability.
In this qualification, you will complete most of your course work in the simulated salon environment of TAFE NSW hairdressing salon.

The Certificate II in Salon Assistant is a preparatory course that prepares you for further, more in-depth study. You will learn foundation technical skills and work on interpersonal skills such as client consultation, customer service and using discretion and judgement.
