The NRMA and TAFE Enterprise - open road ahead
As one of Australia’s most respected motoring organisations, NRMA saw a need for continuous pipeline of well-trained and trusted mechanics. To achieve this, they partnered with TAFE Enterprise, ensuring both outstanding results and a measurable return on investment.
The challenge
The NRMA is the largest employer of light vehicle apprentice mechanics in the state and wants to ensure its tradespeople are future-proof. The iconic brand employs more than 135 mechanics and 58 apprentices across its network of 23 car-servicing and repair branches in NSW and the ACT.
TAFE Enterprise delivered
Acknowledging the NRMA’s requirement of apprentices trained for the future, TAFE Enterprise:
- modified the AUR3016 Automotive, Retail, Service and Repair training package including 20 core subjects and 16 elective subjects;
- incorporated training for future contingencies such as hybrid vehicle safety and advanced diesel diagnostics;
- customised the training package to allow apprentices from around the state to complete studies in one block over one week at the Ultimo campus;
- provided each the NRMA cohort with subject-matter experts for every level of training.
The result
TAFE Enterprise’s customised program delivered apprentices with advanced skills to meet the needs of the changing automotive world. Expert trainers covered every aspect, and TAFE Enterprise proved once again its adaptability and ability to provide unique programs for the NRMA’s specific needs.
Other outcomes include:
- a 90% retention rate across the NRMA’s entire apprenticeship program;
- the opportunity to complete a second apprenticeship in Automotive Electrical, giving students a variety of skills to suit different career paths;
- Opportunity for top-performing apprentices to complete a fully subsidised Certificate II in Air Conditioning or Motorsports.
