Office of Sport and TAFE Enterprise - creating leaders together
The Office of Sport has many responsibilities: planning, managing and delivering high quality venues and facilities, running sport and active recreation development programs, in addition to overseeing high performance sport and ensuring the ongoing integrity and safety of participants.
Challenges
- To provide relevant, flexible and specific training designed to meet the needs of the Office of Sport;
- To enhance existing managerial and leadership capability and set a benchmark for best practice;
- To cross-pollinate knowledge across locations and expose employees to other offices and customer situations;
- To break down barriers and silos, build strong employee relationships and create a consistent management culture across business units.
TAFE Enterprise delivered
TAFE Enterprise implemented a training solution within six weeks of initial discussions and we were able to customise the delivery of the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. Staff were invited to apply via an internal Expression of Interest form, with 80 staff being chosen to complete this training.
- A Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, with a minimum of 12 units of competency designed to suit the requirements of the Office of Sport;
- Training in two-day blocks, on rotation across five Office of Sport locations, with staff required to visit each location throughout the year;
- TAFE NSW devised a contextualised and customised Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
The result
The Office of Sport found that providing staff with an opportunity to meet with other colleagues from around the State has created strong cohesion and has been a catalyst for cultural change across the organisation. There has been widespread interest in the program from aspiring managers and a range of other staff across the organisation, ready to participate in the next wave of capability development.
