Course Details

The Responsible Conduct of Gaming (RCG) opens your career opportunities to gain work gambling industry. Learn to provide responsible gambling services and manage patrons using gaming machines in your establishment with a Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) card.


Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:

  • Provide responsible gambling services to customers
  • Promote safety (harm minimisation) in venues where there are gaming machines
  • Recognise gambling problems and addiction
  • Follow legal and organisational procedures
  • Stay up to date with the latest gambling law


Develop the attributes to help you get ahead:

  • Effective communication skills

  • Judgement skills


Completing this course provides you with:

  • An interim RCG certification that allows you to work immediately in gaming venues across NSW, before applying for competency card
  • Knowledge of regulations and legislation around gaming responsibilities

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Photo identification such as your license or proof of age card


By successfully completing this course, you will receive an interim Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certification to allow you to work immediately in gaming venues across NSW.

You will need your interim RCG certificate to apply for an RCG competency card through the NSW Services.

Important: you can take this course to become job ready but you will not be able to work around gaming machines until you are 18 years old.

Competency cards

To get your NSW RCG competency card:

  • Present your interim certificate to a Service NSW centre and complete a 100 point identification check
  • Service NSW will post your card to you. You should allow up to one month for its delivery
  • Digital competency cards are available via the Service NSW app. Download the app from iTunes or Google Play and follow the prompts

Recognition of NSW RCG competency in other jurisdictions

Responsible conduct of gambling legislative and knowledge requirements differ across borders. Check with the relevant state authority for further information.


To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • Access to a computer to retrieve suggested pre-course reading and activities
  • Intermediate level of fitness to transport stock, equipment and stay on your feet for long periods at a time

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

You must be at least 17 years old on the date of your enrolment. This is based on industry and training guidelines.
To be enrolled in this course, students must present valid photo identification and provide a valid email address.

This course is delivered via Video Conference from your nearest TAFE NSW Campus from 8:45 am (for 9:00 am start) to approximately 4:00 pm. You must be in attendance for a minimum of 6 hours to successfully complete the course. Please note you will not be able to join the course after 9:20 am as there is a mandatory lock out time required by Liquor and Gaming NSW.

As well as the in-class course component, you will need to complete approximately 4 hours of other study which includes pre class activities and pre-readings

This is a full time course. You must attend approximately 6 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 4 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Friday with day classes. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

A fee of $140 for RCG qualification applies to this course and includes tuition, Competency Card and all resources required for completion of the qualification. Refer to reverse of the RCG Interim Certificate for examples of identification needed for 100 point ID check required when you take your Certificate to Service NSW to obtain your Liquor and Gaming NSW Competency Card.

To guarantee your position, payment of the course fee must be made PRIOR to commencement of learning activity.
