Course Details
The nationally accredited Certificate III in Health Services Assistance equips you to become an essential part of a health care team in acute or aged care facilities. You'll learn the skills and knowledge to support nurses in the care of patients with different needs and to respond to emergency health situations.
LEARN NEW SKILLS
Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:
- Take and record essential health markers such as temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and blood glucose
- Record intake and output on fluid balance chart and/or food chart
- Measure and record weight
- Collect urine, sputum or faecal specimens
- Understand human body functions and medical terminology
- Practise workplace health and safety measures and infection prevention and control

- Be employed in the health industry as this course is delivered in the workplace

COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS
To be able to undertake work placement within industry you need to meet other requirements. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:
- A National Police Check
- A signed copy of NSW Health code of conduct form and any other forms as required
- Successful completion of occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against infectious diseases
- Your health care worker/student vaccination record card
WORK PLACEMENT
Work placement provides you with opportunities to practice responding to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.
Depending on your elective units, campus location and delivery method, you may be required to undertake a mandatory 120 hours of work placement with a suitable
industry employer.
Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will either arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
HLTAIN001 (Assist with nursing care in an acute care environment): Student would have an option to choose and complete this elective unit which requires completion of 80 hours in an acute care environment (i.e. Hospital settings ONLY). Student is required to organise their own work placement and the chosen healthcare facility to complete this work placement unit must be approved by the TAFE Digital course teacher. STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a self paced, online course. The course will run for 18 months.
There are no nominated workplace hours required for this course, however to achieve the competency in the course, you are required to complete a range of practical assessment tasks in the real and/ or simulated health care environment. You will have an option to either complete various practical assessment tasks with TAFE at 2 day face to face workshop in Sydney or can organise your own work placement to complete these practical tasks only in a acute care setting within a real health care facility/ Hospitals or relevant health care setting as approved by TAFE teachers. SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
