
Expand your employability and become a specialist elevated work platforms (EWP) arborist. Safely operate EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more and experience the thrill of working from heights with a chainsaw to dismantle and prune trees.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Use elevated work platforms and a chainsaw to dismantle or perform pruning reductions on trees
Operate a boom-type elevated work platform from heights of 11 metres, or more
Perform elevated work platform rescues, controlled descent escapes and provide First Aid
Identify trees, inspect them for access, complete arboriculture work and implement a tree maintenance program
Trim, cut and manually fell trees at an intermediate level using chainsaws
Maintain chainsaws
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
Practical experience on the job with your employer or in simulated workplace environments
A sound understanding of elevated work platform arborist techniques for pruning or dismantling trees
The ability to inspect sites for correct access and dismantling space
Experience in pruning established trees in urban environments using elevated work platforms
Comfortable working at heights with a chainsaw on elevated work platforms
Some courses require evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate III in Arboriculture (Elevated Work Platform – EWP Arborist) as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol in the course as a trainee you must:
Be in relevant employment as a Trainee, as this course is delivered in the workplace.
Have a signed traineeship contract as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer and your Training Plan Proposal (TPP) submitted with your application.

To complete this course, you may need to attend a different TAFE NSW campus for specialist units as training is combined across Yallah (in Wollongong), Richmond, Padstow, Ryde and Wetherill Park campuses. This ensures you can access industry equipment. Your teacher will inform you when assessments are scheduled and if travel to another campus is necessary.
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
Confidence working at heights
Intermediate level fitness to manage physical demands using chainsaws, carrying materials, working on uneven surfaces
Steel-capped boots, long sleeve shirts and chainsaw protective pants (chaps) in drill cotton. You will need these from your first class.
A class C Car licence to transport tools and equipment around a range of TAFE NSW simulated environments that may be distant from your campus location
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level.
TAFE NSW may ask you to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test. This skills test helps us to understand your individual study needs, to design an individualised plan that supports your study success and ensures your LLN skills match the demands of the course.
A valid form of ID to prove you are at least 18 years old as part of SafeWork NSW requirements to undertake the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence assessment conducted via this course.
You must successfully pass both the TAFE NSW and SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence assessments to be eligible for your SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence. For more details, see the licensing section below.

This course leads to a licensed occupation in NSW which means you must hold a SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence to gain employment in this field. This course includes unit/s that allow you to apply to be assessed for the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence. SafeWork NSW conducts the licence assessment and requires you to be at least 18 years old by the time you are assessed, evidenced by a valid form of ID.
During your course, you will enrol in your specific licensing assessment by logging into the MyServiceNSW app. Visit MyServiceNSW to set up your account. Once logged in, follow these four steps:
1. Complete your digital proof of identity by providing two forms of listed identification.
2. Select and enrol in your chosen SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence assessment through your MyServiceNSW account. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your Assessment Enrolment Number (AEN).
3. Provide your AEN to the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence accessor before your assessment.
4. After successfully completing your assessment, your results will be sent directly to your email address.
Please note: You can get support with the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence enrolment process by calling Service NSW on 13 77 88, Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm (AEST).

Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
