Digital Careers Trainees Program – launching ICT careers

TAFE NSW is looking for up to five (5) new trainees to work with our newly created field and network support teams, located across five TAFE NSW regions.

This 2-year new entrant traineeship will provide you with invaluable hands-on work and supervised training by a qualified ICT staff member, as well as formal training in accredited qualifications at Certificate III level.

The locations for the 5 field and network support trainee positions, commencing July 2019, are:

  • Port Macquarie (1)
  • Wagga Wagga or Albury (1)
  • Orange or Dubbo (1)
  • Strathfield (1)
  • Ultimo (1)

All traineeship positions will comply with the regulatory requirements of the NSW Department of Industry. Trainees will require a training contract signed by TAFE NSW and the trainee and approved by Training Services NSW. One of the trainee roles will include a targeted Aboriginal position.

To qualify for the Digital Careers Trainee Program you must:

  • Have satisfactorily completed the Higher School Certificate, including a technology-related course/subject (or equivalent), within the previous 12 months
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia, New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand passport who has been resident in Australia for at least six months, or hold one of the visa sub classes outlined in the VET Visa Information document.
  • Be able to satisfactorily complete a Working with Children Check, and Criminal History Check.

Selection process

Step 1 – Register your interest (not compulsory) and/or attend an information session

The first stage of the process is to register your interest via digitalcareers@tafensw.edu.au to obtain additional information or answers to your questions.

Step 2 – Submit job application viaI work for NSW’

Your job application follows the standard application process for NSW Government positions and is entirely online. You will be required to provide important information about your experience, interest and general application criteria, including educational and work-related experience. Your resume must also detail two (2) referees who will be able to provide information about your past work experience, skills, character and general conduct. Technical difficulties? Step 3 – Merit based selection

You will be asked to attend (at your own expense) a TAFE NSW campus location identified for the specific position listed in the table to undertake:

  • An individual task where you will be presented a scenario on a laptop, then asked to use that laptop to respond to the scenario.
  • A behavioural interview consisting of a structured set of questions designed to demonstrate your capabilities and past experience.

Step 4 – Offer of Employment

If you are successful at the selection phase, we will contact the referees listed in your application. If your referee reports are satisfactory, we will then make you an offer.
Your offer will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, i.e.; citizenship, visa, qualification, working with children and criminal history – and then your exciting ICT career with TAFE NSW begins!

FAQs

The Digital Careers Program is focused on Information Communication and Technology roles within TAFE NSW. It provides an opportunity for entry-level traineeships. The 2-year program provides employment opportunities in both metropolitan and regional areas in a supportive environment with a personal mentor and coaches.

As a full time trainee, your terms and conditions of employment will be covered by the Miscellaneous Award 2010 under a training contract working 35 hours per week. Importantly, you will have every opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge relevant to your ICT traineeship and be paid for time spent attending related training or assessments.

Only Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia, New Zealand citizens with a current New Zealand passport who have been residing in Australia for at least six months or hold a current visa that allows them to work full-time in Australia until at least July 2021 at the time of the application are eligible to apply.

Recognition from the Australian Government Department of Education and Training or the appropriate State or Territory Overseas Qualifications Unit is required as evidence of eligibility for the Digital Careers program.

Because we understand that recent school leavers may have limited (if any) work experience, this is not an essential requirement for this program. You will, however, need to demonstrate that you are able to meet all the relevant focus capabilities (see Role Descriptions). You can include any volunteer or project experience you may have gained during your studies (at school, with a VET provider or at a higher education institution), as these can demonstrate your skills and experience. You should also include any part-time or casual work, especially where it relates to ICT or customer service experience.

No. The Digital Careers Program is a full-time 2-year program.

There are five (5) trainee roles available, spread between Wagga Wagga, Wollongong, Port Macquarie, Albury, Orange, Dubbo, Strathfield and Ultimo. Please refer to the table for the relevant positions available at each location.
