Course Details

This course is for trade qualified and licensed light vehicle mechanics who wish to become an Authorised Examiner. The course is open to light and heavy vehicle mechanics.

The Authorised ASCIS Examiner is responsible for inspection of currently registered vehicles to ensure compliance with safety check standards. They carry out examination of light vehicles, motorcycles and light trailers and issue inspection certificates used for vehicle registration, defect clearance and other reasons.

You must have a current APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter with PROPRIETOR and/or EXAMINER listed in the Eligibility section BEFORE enrolling in this course.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

  • a TfNSW (formally RMS/RTA) Approval for Training letter confirming EXAMINER under eligibility.

This course includes online learning and practical skills assessment at TAFE NSW. All course and attendance information is sent to the student 1 week before the start of the course. Please contact for any questions.

This is a blended flexible course. You will need to attend approximately 4 hours of class, over 1 day. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 6 hours of other study including online learning.


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • have been directed to receive training for the role of ASCIS Examiner (Pink Slips) by Transport for NSW (formally RMS/RTA).

The ASCIS Examiner carries out inspection of currently registered light vehicles to ensure compliance with Safety Check Standards and issues inspection reports used by vehicle owners for registration and other purposes.


Additional services and study support will be subject to Transport for NSW approval. Requests for interpreters and other support services must be made in writing to Language interpreters are not permitted.

This training is not subsidised by Government funding. There are no fee exemptions, concessions or subsidies available for this course.
