  • Completion of the Certificate II in Animal Care as evidenced by your certificate or transcript, or

  • Completion of a Certificate III or higher qualification in a related field, like the Certificate III in Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care or Certificate III in Animal Care Services, as evidenced by your certificate or transcript, or

  • Take part in an interview and complete a TAFE NSW Entry Pathways Toolkit, which we will use to evaluate your current skills and knowledge in an animal science discipline to determine if they are equivalent to the above qualifications

  • Access to a veterinary clinic to fulfil your mandatory work placement requirements as evidenced by a letter with an official letterhead from your employer

  • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:

    • work placement at a Veterinary Clinic or Animal Hospital for 1 day per week for the duration of the course

  • Once this has been done complete your application.

  • You will be contacted for screening for Literacy and numeracy skills. You must achieve ACSF Level 3 or above for Learning, Reading and Numeracy, and ACSF Level 4 or above for Writing and Oral Communication.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • to be self directed in your learning
    • good Internet access
    • to use Microsoft Word for your assessment tasks. As a TAFE Digital student you can access Microsoft Office 365 for free.
    • be confident in using the Internet and email, chatting to your teachers or others online, reading course content online, using common software and uploading your assessments including video files.
  • Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

    • a minimum of 480 hrs of work placement in order to complete the practical aspects of the course and meet the mandatory workplacement requirement
    • be reasonably physically fit to undertake the work placement as the tasks and activities involve handling animals and may involve manual lifting
    • Some units require you to demonstrate skills with several different types of animals or demonstrate the use of specific equipment. If your workplace only deals with one species, or doesn't have the equipment required for all the tasks in a unit, you will be required to do some work placement at another facility to gain and demonstrate those skills.

Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you:

  • The ability to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include enclosed shoes, full-length trousers and sleeved tops

  • Intermediate level fitness to manage physical demands like lifting and handling animals

  • Access to a computer with an internet connection

  • Flexibility to work outside of business hours

  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level

  • TAFE NSW may ask you to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test.

  • This skills test helps us to understand your individual study needs, to design an individualised plan that supports your study success and ensures your LLN skills match the demands of the course.

Completion requirements

During your study, you'll need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Completion of a minimum of 480 hours of mandatory work placement in a veterinary clinic, where you will work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or a qualified veterinary nurse
