Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

    WORKPLACE Delivery: Semester 1 = 7hrs per week x 18 wks, Semesters 2,3,4 = 6 hrs per fortnight (students are in the workplace every 2nd week)

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

    • You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times prior to starting class a detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx. $550 which you will retain on completion of your training.
    • Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee. You will need to purchase a uniform at $50 from TAFE NSW Hairdressing Section and are required to bring a laptop and iPad to class.

  • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

    • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
    • employed full time
    • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
    • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified hairdresser after successful completion

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Hairdressing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 28 units of competency, including 21 core and 7 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

Course delivery Studying at your Workplace

You will get your training on the job, supervised by a workplace training officer or your employer. This training is undertaken at your place of employment. Work-based learning may also include completing work-based projects while under supervision. You may need to attend an on campus assessment and/or a teacher might need to observe and assess you in a real or simulated environment.
