Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Skills assessments: practical demonstrations under observation such as choosing spectacle frames, adjusting and fitting spectacles

  • Knowledge assessments: true/false, multiple-choice, short answer, and extended response questions

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

    • a trainee (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
    • employed
    • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
    • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified optical dispenser after successful completion

    To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • access to a computer, printer, software programs and reliable internet

    Work Placement is a requirement of this couse. You will need to complete:

    • 100 hours of work experience
    • three (3) mandatory 4-5 day block release face to face learning and practical sessions in a simulated optical dispensing workplace that reflects industry best practice standards and activities.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 14 units of competency, including 9 core and 5 speciality units.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

  • Provide advice on optical appliances HLTOPD001-GRADED

  • Dispense optical appliances HLTOPD002-GRADED

  • Dispense atypical prescriptions HLTOPD003-GRADED

  • Process and manage optical appliance orders HLTOPD005-GRADED

Course Delivery Combination Study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
