Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge assessments: quizzes, short answer questions, case studies, written tasks, research projects

  • Practical assessments: manual handling, medication administration, wound care and activities of daily living

  • Workplace assessments: written tasks, reflective journals, verbal or written questioning, practical demonstrations, workplace portfolio

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

    • a minimum of 400 workplace clinical hours to complete the program. Clinical placements will be undertaken at South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Hospitals.
    • undertake a criminal record check before placement in health facilities.

    If called to interview, applicants will be asked to sign an acknowledgment of their ability to meet the physical and emotional demands of an Enrolled Nurse. You must declare, during your interview, any health condition(s) (physical or mental), which might prevent you from performing the demands of the job.

    All units of competency and the workplace clinical must be successfully completed to receive the qualification and to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Materials needed

To complete this course, the following materials are required:

  • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

    • Work placement uniform, students are required to wear black pants or skirt, closed-in black shoes, and TAFE work placement shirt. TAFE provides one shirt, any extra shirts are at a cost of $20.
    • Textbooks are not compulsory but some may be recomended. A list of reccommended textbook will be available. These can cost between $50 to $200.
    • Students will be required to have immunisations prior to their clinical placement. The cost of these will vary for each student depending on their immunisation status.
    • An Australian Federal Police check is required.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Diploma of Nursing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 25 units of competency, including 20 core and 5 speciality units.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
