Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Obtain engineering measurements and prepare freehand sketches to depict information
Perform structural welding according to industry standards
Welding and thermal cutting using a range of processes and substances
Implement forming and shaping techniques
Monitor the quality of welding and fabrication projects
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
An understanding of structural development and construction working to industry standards and codes
The ability to fabricate items like toolboxes, stoves, barbecues, pizza ovens and rotating hoppers
A nationally accredited trade qualification at certificate III level
Credits towards a Certificate IV qualification to enhance your career opportunities
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking/welding) as an apprenticeship only.
To be eligible for this course, you must:
Be employed as an apprentice in industry
Register with an Apprenticeship Network Provider who will support your application
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level
The ability to work in different environments, including on and off site, outdoors, indoors, confined spaces and high temperature environments
An interest in pursuing a career in the heavy transport, mining, shipbuilding or engineering industries
An enthusiasm for practical skills in fabrication and heat treatment forging and shaping

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking/welding) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 96 units of competency, including 33 core and 63 speciality units.
Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.
