Dealing with the switch from study to work

Unlike college, you won't have as much holiday time, and you won't be able to get away with calling in sick or coming in late because you had a "late night"

The move from study to the workplace can be a big leap. Suddenly you're responsible more than just handing in your coursework on time. It's a big shift to go from being a student to an employee, so take the time to read these tips on how to make the switch as smooth as possible.

1. Office etiquette

Always ask about the dress code before you start a new job and if in doubt, always dress smartly. Take your cues about things like clothing, lunch hours and working relationships from those around you.

2. Facebook antics

When you were a student, it might have been funny to post photographs of yourself drunk or half-naked at a party, but now that you're working that's a big no-no. Most prospective employees will do a quick Google search of your name. And once you're employed, any statements you make on a social networking site or photos you publish could lead to dismissal, so take care on social media.

3. Performance

You might not have exams to pass or assignments to hand in at work, but you're going to have to sit through a performance review where you'll be evaluated by your manager. When you start a job, it will likely be on a trial period, so putting in the effort is essential. And whether working in an office setting or outdoor workplace, teamwork skills are vital.

4. Time-keeping

Unlike college, you won't have as much holiday time, and you won't be able to get away with calling in sick or coming in late because you had a "late night"! Remember that your performance review (which usually connects to your salary) will take into account punctuality as well as number of days sick.

5. Be professional

Always be courteous and respectful of colleagues and clients. A professional attitude is a must. Though you have lots to offer in the way of skills and experience, remember that you're the new person, so listen and learn!

Moving from the classroom to the office isn't always simple. But by preparing well and applying yourself, you can make the process as smooth as possible. If you need help managing the transition, contact the student services department at your campus.
