Make-up and hairstyling tips to take you from the office to your Christmas party

With Christmas upon us and with it, the arrival of party season, TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Beauty and Hairdressing Betty Rensink, highlights her top tips to take your look from the office to the Christmas party.

Betty has worked in the industry for over 20 years with brands including Clarins, Inglot, De Lorenzo and Matrix.  Her qualifications in beauty and hairdressing combine creative and business expertise in areas of management and brings a depth of industry experience to TAFE NSW students.

Preparation
In the morning, good preparation is key for long lasting make up. The first step is to apply a good base of make-up and stay hydrated during the day. Layer primer under your foundation and take your time applying concealer under the eyes and over any red patches such as around the nose.

Come 5pm your base may need a quick refresh with under-eye concealer and a sweep of mattifying powder, and then you are ready to apply the finishing touches.

Choose a feature to highlight
Decide on an area to focus on, you could wear a bold red lip, glow with bronzer (this can make your eyes look brighter and your teeth whiter) or wear glitter eyeliner underneath the eyes (it is party season after all).

Finishing touches
If your brows need grooming, brush them up with an eyebrow brush and fill in any gaps in your eyebrows with a pencil. Add a generous coating of mascara to lengthen the lash and get out your eyelash curlers to add the ultimate glam. The final step to getting your make up to last through them night is to spritz with a setting spray to seal in your look.

Now for your hair…

Don’t try too hard
For a perfectly ‘undone’ look, try a deep side part and wear your hair out with loose defined curls. Add some volume with some dry shampoo and massage that in with your fingers while your hair is flipped over.

Go sleek
Part your hair in the morning before work and straighten sections of your hair with some tongs. Pop your tongs in your handbag to do a little touch up before the party starts to keep that sleek look going into the night.

Tie it up
If you would prefer to keep your hair out of the way while making a statement, try a top knot. Firstly, pull your hair into a high pony and slick it back with a bit of gel. Wrap your pony tail around your hair band and pin it at the ends to create a fresh, summery bun.

Add a bit of hair spray to keep your style in place and hey presto… you are party ready.
