TAFE NSW Regional General Manager Susie George has announced TAFE NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and Hastings Council have joined forces on a collaboration to ensure that new Australians are equipped with the skills they need to enjoy Australian beaches.

TAFE NSW Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) students will attend a Migrant Beach Safety Program at Flynns Beach tomorrow, on 11 March.

Ms George said the program is an important initiative that will keep Port Macquarie’s newest residents safe while enjoying local beaches. 

“It’s reassuring to know that all community members will be empowered with the important skills they need to take responsibility for their safety and navigate dangers along our coastline.”

“The Program will equip students with the skills they need to assess beach and surf conditions, understand communication tools such as red and yellow flags and identify safe swimming zones.”

For most of the students participating in the program, it will be the first time they have visited an Australian beach.  

“The students have recently migrated to the Hastings from a diverse array of countries including Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Cambodia and Taiwan.

“The program will make a tangible impact on our AMEP students and we hope that they will be able to safely enjoy the fantastic local beaches in their new community.”

In 2019, the program was successfully delivered to students in Yamba, Ballina, Kingscliff and Coffs Harbour.
