Short course success at TAFE NSW Walgett

Two groups of talented and enthusiastic students have graduated from TAFE NSW Walgett with nationally-recognised skills as locals embrace the range of exciting courses on offer.

Twelve students completed a Statement of Attainment in Floristry, while another 12 students completed a Statement of Attainment in General Induction to Construction (NSW Whitecard).

With the Australian Government Jobs Outlook website predicting more than 4,000 new floristry jobs across Australia until 2023, and more than 70,000 new building labourer positions, TAFE Services Coordinator Walgett, Doreen Peters, hopes the skills the students have acquired will benefit the local community.

Four members of the Dharriwaa Elders Group (DEG) graduated from the Statement of Attainment in General Induction to Construction (NSW Whitecard) course.

DEG Project Manager, Wendy Spencer, said, “Speaker Clem Dodd, Treasurer Richard Lake, member Thomas Morgan and DEG staff member Brendan Welsh completed the course to inspire young people in the community to follow them, and so they can supervise activities in future DEG enterprises.”

Floristry graduate Cathie Colless said, “I absolutely loved every minute of the floristry course – If I could go back and do it all again I would.

“I live on a farm and we are severely impacted by the drought, so not only was the course a great distraction, I learnt some new skills that will help me as a part-time hobby florist.

“I have completed a number of practical short courses at TAFE NSW over the years. I have an active mind, I love learning and being busy, so the short courses are perfect for anyone who wants to learn something new.”

The next available short course at TAFE NSW Walgett is a Statement of Attainment in Civil Construction (Skid Steer and Excavator) from November 11-15, followed by a Statement of Attainment in First Aid on December 3.

There is also a large range of exciting new semester one courses open for enrolment in 2020, including a Certificate I and Certificate II in Fundamental Aboriginal Languages for Personal Use, and a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing).
