TAFE NSW beauty student lands career of a lifetime

They say if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life, which is exactly what one TAFE NSW beauty student intends to do.

Eighteen year old Blair Daly, who completed a Diploma of Beauty Therapy at TAFE NSW Ultimo, has been offered a nine month contract to work as a beauty therapist with Steiner, the company who operate luxury spas on cruise ships around the world.

The job came to light after Steiner visited TAFE NSW Ultimo to offer beauty students the opportunity to apply for a job with them.

Ms Daly said, “I was so excited when I heard that Steiner were coming to TAFE NSW Ultimo. They had visited the year before, however unfortunately as I was under 18 at the time I couldn’t be involved in the recruitment process.

“On the first day they came and spoke to my entire class, giving us information about their spas and the services they offer. After this they ran a recruitment process that included practical assessments, like giving facials and massages. They also tested our communication skills by having us present, which I was very nervous about.”

As the youngest student to participate, Ms Daly was convinced she wasn’t going to be selected.

“I know how competitive it is to be chosen for these types of jobs, so when I found out that I’d been successful I was absolutely over the moon!

“For as long as I can remember I’ve dreamt of working in the beauty industry and I love travelling, so to be offered a job where I get to do what I’m passionate about and travel the world at the same time is the most amazing feeling.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Beauty, Trina Storey-Hollis said, “We are so proud of Blair for being successfully recruited by Steiner. The qualifications our students receive at TAFE NSW provides them with real skills for real jobs to set them up for successful employment outcomes.

At TAFE NSW we regularly host recruitment days with representatives from the beauty industry. These days help our students to develop their interview and networking skills, leading into current and future employment.”

Currently studying a Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialist Makeup Services) at TAFE NSW Ultimo which she will complete in December, Ms Daly will fly to London early next year where she will complete six weeks of training with Steiner, before starting a nine month adventure around the world.
