TAFE NSW Dubbo graduate goes from patient to nurse

TAFE NSW Dubbo graduate Jackie Bayley is proof that anything is possible after overcoming mental health challenges to realise her dream of becoming an Enrolled Nurse.

A determined 23-year-old Ms Bayley, credits the support from TAFE NSW Dubbo and the care she received from other nurses for her motivation to complete a Diploma of Nursing and pursue a career caring for others in similar situations.

“Studying to be a nurse at TAFE NSW has really helped me find my purpose in life,” Ms Bayley said.

“It took me three years, being in and out of hospital, to complete a Diploma of Nursing and at times I wanted to give up. I’m so grateful for the teaching staff at TAFE NSW – they have been my biggest cheerleaders.

“The course has not only given me the practical skills needed to be a nurse, but also developed my confidence to achieve my goals. I really valued the flexibility at TAFE NSW and I’d encourage others to give it a go, no matter what your situation.”

Acting TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Nursing and Health Louise Posa said Jackie is a student who epitomises determination and resilience.

“She did not and would not give up, and neither would we allow her to. We could see a nurse before us and supported her with the practical skills and reassurance so that she could achieve that,” Ms Posa said.

“I believe that Jackie will also be a fantastic mentor to new nurses who have the pleasure of working with her in the future.

Research forecasts by Health Workforce Australia suggest that by 2025, 85,000 full-time registered nurses and midwives will be needed nationwide.

Ms Posa added: “Jackie sets a wonderful example of students coming to TAFE NSW and the support they receive to launch their careers in an industry that will continue to have a strong demand for trained workers.”
