TAFE NSW produces the goods for Ethan

18-year-old Ethan Cranford has fast tracked his way to an exciting career in live production after studying at TAFE NSW.

After leaving high school at the end of year 10 and trying out a range of professions including hospitality and construction, Ethan knew he had a passion for live production, but didn’t know how he could make his way into the industry.

“I didn’t really know how to get my foot in the door, but when I saw that I could complete a Certificate III in Live Production and Services at TAFE NSW in six months, I knew it was something I had to try,” Ethan said.

Ethan enrolled in the course and was astonished by how quickly he was able to secure a full-time job after the completion of the qualification.

“This course not only gave me the skills and experience to enter the industry, but my teacher also connected me with UNSW Hospitality, which eventually led to my full-time position as an audio-visual technician there,” Ethan said.

“The training was great, each of my teachers had extensive experience within the industry and many of them were continuing to work as they taught, which allowed them to keep up with relevant changes that would directly affect me when I entered the workforce.”

The Certificate III in Live Production gives students practical skills to work on sound, lighting and staging for clubs, concerts, conferences and corporate events.

Students gather knowledge from current industry professionals working in live audio, lighting and staging, like energetic TAFE NSW teacher Leo Orbolato.

“We train our students to work in a variety of scenarios. Best of all, they get to work with actual musicians and performers doing regular gigs to hone their skills,” Leo said.

“Successful completion of the Certificate III in Live Production and Services, and the contacts you make at TAFE NSW, will put you in a good position to apply for a role as an assistant in audio, lighting or crewing, or as a casual technician.”
