TAFE NSW students exhibit signs of career success

Crochet Cacti created by Alexandra Clayton

TAFE NSW Macksville students studying a Certificate III in Career Advancement which focuses on art and design displayed their wares in an exhibition on Friday night.

Held at Bowraville Community Hall, the exhibition was open to the public. Attendees browsed through the 11 stalls which had TAFE NSW student’s creations available for purchase.

TAFE NSW Relieving Head Teacher of Career Pathways, Aboriginal Language and Employability Skills, Emily Pellier said this course equips students with the capabilities to either move on to a higher qualification or be able to open their own business in their chosen field.

“Students who study this course have usually already found their passion, they just need guidance from an experienced professional on how to master their skill set and in addition, learn the practical side of running and sustaining a business.

“We have a range of artists in this class who crochet, design lino prints and paint. The environment we provide allows for these students to grow as artists.

“Students received some really positive feedback at the exhibition and sold some items. This has given them an extra boost of confidence before graduating.”

Alexandra Clayton has been crocheting cacti for the past two years, selling the designs in an art store in Bellingen. Ms Clayton studies the Certificate III in Career Advancement in order to assist her in a dream of opening a craft store.

“Studying at TAFE NSW has helped me become more organised and assisted me in my communication skills.

“It has been especially helpful being in a class room with an experienced teacher and fellow creative students who are all willing and available to give feedback on details ranging from business name ideas to minute aspects of your designs.

“My next step is to undertake a photoshop course at TAFE NSW to broaden my skill set before opening my own store.”
