An Auburn father and son are working side by side, playing a pivotal role in helping to build Australia's 5G network after studying telecommunications together at TAFE NSW Lidcombe.
With 20 years' experience in the telecommunications industry under his belt, self-employed contractor Yaz Kaya says completing a Diploma in Telecommunications has expanded his business to service the booming 5G network rollout.
"My studies at TAFE NSW have given me the knowledge and skills I needed to take on work in RCR wireless; without it, I wouldn't have been able to do the work we do now," says Mr Kaya.
"I've been running my business for 10 years, and since June last year, the demand has enabled me to grow my team to employ 10 staff, building 5G sites for Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone."
Mr Kaya's 14-year-old son, Kaan, joined him in the classroom studying Certificate III in Telecommunications as part of a traineeship after showing a keen interest and aptitude for the family trade.
"Now, at 16, he's fully qualified, and once he gets his license in August, he's at the stage where he can completely manage his own worksites," said Mr Kaya.
"I'm approached regularly on LinkedIn asking how to get involved in 5G installation.”
“The first thing I recommend is to complete a telecommunication course at TAFE NSW; if you want a foot in the door, this is your best first step."
TAFE NSW Head Teacher Telecommunications Phillip Lennon says with telecommunications companies accelerating the rollout of infrastructure to increase 5G services, there's no better time to upskill.
"There is an ongoing demand for skilled technicians across all areas of the industry; Yaz and Kaan are a great example of the opportunities available for anyone thinking of upskilling or changing their careers," said Mr Lennon.
"With the extension of the Federal Government's Boosting Apprenticeships Wage Subsidy and increased JobTrainer fee-free places, now is the perfect time to take advantage of funding initiatives to help you change your career or expand your business."
