With some of the most remote towns and Campuses in the state, TAFE Western covers an enormous chunk of NSW and students often have to travel lengthy distances to get to and from their classes and training. Some of these roads are potholed and unsealed.
Fiona Westcott, from TAFE Western's Customer Innovation, told the Champion Post that the RMS approached TAFE Western to help facilitate the initiative. "We thought it was a great opportunity to influence some of the road's most at-risk users," she said. "Anything that we can do to help ensure our students get to and from their training safely is very worthwhile."
Ms Westcott facilitated the program with input from TAFE Western Automotive head teachers Brian Musgrove and Paul Chaseling. The five key areas the program focuses on are speed, driver fatigue, animals on rural roads, driver distraction (with an emphasis on mobile phone use) and alcohol and drugs.
"We all need to be delivering the same message to our apprentices regarding road safety," said Ms Westcott. "And this message needs to be consistent between the employer, training provider and RMS."
