Pathway to veterinary nursing helping to train the workforce of the future

30 November 2023

TAFE NSW Orange is offering a crucial stepping-stone to meet the need for skilled, job-ready workers in the high demand field of Veterinary Nursing.

With the entire country experiencing a critical shortage in veterinary services, learners in the Central West are taking advantage of a Statement of Attainment in Veterinary Nursing to kick-start careers in the industry, which is expected to see a 15% increase in jobs by 2026.

TAFE NSW Veterinary Nursing teacher, Amber Kerr, said she has been seeing consistently full classes across veterinary courses in the Central West.

“Offering a shorter Statement of Attainment in Veterinary Nursing provides students with foundational knowledge and insight into the operation of vet clinics, as well as an introduction into the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing,” Ms Kerr said.

“Work placement hours are required in the Certificate IV and while there is a huge demand for Vet Nurses, clinics are very busy and can only take on so many students at a time.

“Completing the short course first means students have more time to source work placement but can still make a start on their studies and follow a pathway to veterinary nursing.”

Veterinary Nurse and TAFE NSW Orange graduate, Fiona Wright, said she has always felt comfortable around animals which prompted her to seek a qualification doing what she loves.

“I started with the Statement of Attainment in Veterinary Nursing to get an idea of the study commitment required and to allow myself extra time to secure work placement in a local clinic as part of the Certificate IV,” Fiona said.

“There were so many practical learning opportunities that TAFE NSW provided, I learnt how to collect and run specific tests on different variations of samples, how to calculate medication dosages, and how to liaise professionally with clients.”

“Studying at TAFE NSW completely changed my confidence and perspective on learning and helped me to realise that with the right skills and the right people to guide you, it’s possible to achieve the career you want.”

“I am proud to say that since graduating with a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, I have been accepted into University, where I plan on continuing my studies to advance my career as a veterinarian.”
