It is safe to assume Jack Mylott’s career trajectory was formed quite early, considering he is a fourth generation baker and his been baking in his family’s kitchen since he was just eight years old.
The 20-year-old apprentice baker from Newcastle completed his Certificate III in Retail Baking (Combined) in Hamilton earlier this year and is now being mentored by Francessco Gulisano at the prestigious Dolcettini Pattisserie in Sydney.
Mr Mylott has now claimed the title of Bake Skills Australia Pastry Champion for 2019 at the Bake Skills Australia National Baking Championships, where he competed against, and upstaged some of the most talented bakers in the country.
It has been a successful year for Jack, who won the Champion Best Bakery Apprentice in the biscuit exhibit at the Sydney Royal Show, and was named runner up for the Australia Society of Baking Sydney J Packham Scholarship which recognises excellence in the field and support career advancement.
Mr Mylott said, “I am over the moon with the results!
“Growing up I always loved baking and making cakes. University wasn’t the right path for me; getting an apprenticeship and training at TAFE NSW made sense for me to succeed in my career aspirations to be a baker.
“There’s just something about baking – it’s a family thing, it brings people together and makes everyone feel at home.”
Sydney Royal Professional Bakery Chair of Judges, Ian Huntley said the competition is of a very high standard and many exhibitors train for months to get their exhibits ready for judging.
“It is extremely important to foster and celebrate the next generation of bakers. The high calibre of exhibits entered into our student class this year is a testament to the great educational programs out there. Jack’s practical education and impressive skills were reflected in his award-winning entries.
“I congratulate Jack’s achievement and look forward to see what he brings to the table next year.”
According to the Australian Government Job Outlook, the number of people working as Bakers and Pastry cooks grew very strongly over the past 5 years and is expected to grow from 34,900 in 2018 to 39,200 by 2023.[i]
