TAFE NSW Health Recreation and Fitness teacher Michael Viera kicked off his first season with the Greater Western Sydney Giants as a Sports Trainer and Massage Therapist last year.
With a strong background in the fitness industry and extensive experience as a personal/sports trainer, Michael was recommended for the position through Sports Medicine Australia.
“When the opportunity to work as a sports trainer and massage therapist with the Giants came up, I jumped at the chance,” says Michael. "Working with elite athletes has always been a dream of mine and I’m thrilled to be part of the team."
Michael studied the Certificates in Fitness and Personal Training, and broadened his skills and knowledge with additional courses in sport and remedial massage. During his time as a TAFE NSW student, his teacher encouraged him to come back and teach the next generation.
Taking his teacher’s advice, Michael now teaches fitness to TVET students in years 10, 11 and 12, while managing his own practice ‘Complete Body Dynamics’ and his role with the Giants.
Joshua McLinden changed engineering pathways from a role as engineering technical officer to design engineer.
He says a TAFE Digital course in Water Operations was complementary to his engineering degree and meant he could make his career progression. A large part of his success, Joshua says, was that he simply found TAFE Digital interfaces familiar and easy to use.
After filling the gap in his education, John moved up in his career: "The course was complementary to my university degree and a practical requirement for progression in my job.”
Dubbo smash repairers Jay and John completed certificates in Autobody Repair (Jay) and the Vehicle Painting (John) at TAFE NSW.
They decided to combine their passions for repair and paint and became business partners of Mid City Smash Repairs in Dubbo.
“John and I both had ambitions to own our own business and with two complimentary trades it made sense. We’ve now been business partners for almost seven years,” Jay said.
“I loved going to TAFE NSW because I got to learn other skills and get exposure to different aspects of the trade that you don’t always get in the workshop. It was great to network with other apprentices in the region and talk about workshop experiences.”
Business is booming, they enjoy working for themselves and the security that brings and they are now on the search for a first-year apprentice so they can give back to the industry that they love.
